Artists Hub on Market: 94 Homes and Studios by 2028

The Artists Hub on Market carries 94 affordable artist homes, rehearsal studios and a black box theatre at 1687 Market Street, with completion estimated in 2028. Five hotels and eight cultural venues sit inside a mile of the address.

94 Homes and a Theatre in the Hub

The Artists Hub on Market broke ground at 1687 Market Street on 28 July 2026. The building will hold 94 affordable homes and a set of arts spaces. Mayor Daniel Lurie marked the start of work at the address.

The Hub neighbourhood sits at the crossroads of Hayes Valley, Civic Center, the Mission District and the Castro, in the city release's words. The release estimates completion in 2028, and SF YIMBY reports Spring 2028. Neither source narrows the window further.

The 1925 mattress factory on the parcel came down in February 2026. Construction is under way.

A Resident Arts Community on Market Street

The residents are artists, arts workers, arts administrators and production-related entertainment workers, along with their families. Households earn up to 80 percent of San Francisco Area Median Income. SF YIMBY records the homes as deed-restricted at around that level or less.

Studios, one-bedrooms and two-bedrooms make up the 94 homes. The current plan publishes no unit mix. The November 2024 version published 27 studios, 49 one-bedrooms and 25 two-bedrooms across 101 homes.

An Artists Advisory Group of local artists and arts leaders advocated for the project. Delroy Lindo, an Academy Award-nominated actor and longtime Bay Area resident, sits on the group. The group shapes the citywide artist certification process that guides leasing and advises on programming for the building's arts amenities.

The Rehearsal Studios and the Black Box Theatre

The arts programme lists music and dance rehearsal and practice studios, a black box theatre, and programmatic and office space for Artists Hub on Market. The release also carries a community room, a landscaped roof deck, secured bicycle parking, neighbourhood-serving amenities and on-site resident services.

SF YIMBY places a neighbourhood cafe at the corner of Market and Gough Street. No source publishes a seat count for the black box theatre or a capacity for the rehearsal rooms.

The Arts Commission opens the Artist Housing Certification Program in early 2027. Applicants meet one of three pathways: income of at least $10,000 a year from art in three of the last five years, a selection for an arts grant, award or project within three years, or three work samples. There is no fee. The lottery for this building is anticipated in early 2027.

San Francisco's day-use supply sits elsewhere in the city. The Dayuse San Francisco page, read on 16 October 2026, prints an average price of $119.61 for a day room. The hotelSlots San Francisco directory, read the same day, reads 562 hotels available and shows 24 cards on its first page.
