Otelier and Avalara connect Rec to lodging tax filing
Otelier announced a two-way integration with Avalara on 13 October 2026. The release carries an Atlanta and Durham, North Carolina dateline. The integration connects Avalara's tax calculation and compliance capabilities with Otelier Rec.
Otelier describes the pairing as an industry-first two-way integration. The company states it lets hotel accounting and finance teams automate lodging tax compliance and resolve tax discrepancies earlier in the process.
The integration has been completed and certified. A hotel management company the release does not name is piloting it. It is available now to hotel companies that want to change how they run tax compliance.
What moves between the two systems
Two flows run in opposite directions. Daily revenue summaries and exemption details move from Otelier Rec to Avalara. Avalara automates the preparation, filing and remittance of the sales and lodging tax returns.
The return flow carries the check. Discrepancies between Avalara's verified tax rates and the tax rates applied in the property management system are flagged inside Rec. The finance team takes corrective action before filing.
The working set suits an operator who runs properties across multiple jurisdictions. Tax rates change often in those portfolios. Compliance requirements vary by location.
The tax field set Rec already carries
Rec's own product page describes the module as back-office automation. It automates bank reconciliations and income audit journaling. It reconciles OTA and third-party bookings, and the page names Booking.com and Expedia among the channels it handles.
The same page lists a Tax and variance analytics feature. That feature reports collected tax, estimated tax, tax-exempt revenue and variances every day, using local tax rates and charge codes. The daily variance report the release describes sits inside that field set.
A reason is required for every tax-exempt line
Otelier added a workflow that requires users to record a reason for each tax-exempt line item. The release states that capturing exemption details completes a loop between tax collection in the property management system and Avalara's rate verification, exemption management and return filing.
The release ties the reason field to two outcomes. It states the workflow reduces manual work and errors tied to tax rate updates and to missing tax exemption documents.
Both companies on the record
Russell Meek, senior director of product at Otelier, frames the problem as accuracy across the P&L. "Hotel finance teams are under increasing pressure to ensure accuracy across every line of the P&L, and taxes are one of the most complex and high-risk areas," he said. "By connecting Otelier Rec with Avalara, we're giving operators a way to validate tax data daily, automate compliance workflows, reduce manual work, and eliminate discrepancies before they become costly issues."
Nicole Rogers, general manager of lodging at Avalara, gives the jurisdictional arithmetic. "Tax and compliance teams within the hospitality industry are often managing tax obligations across dozens and sometimes even hundreds of jurisdictions, and the margin for error is shrinking," she said. She said the connection lets operators automate preparation, filing and remittance while validating tax positions.
Otelier reports that it serves more than 10,000 hotels worldwide and carries more than 30 years of experience. Avalara reports more than two decades in tax and compliance, more than 54 billion AvaTax API calls annually, and support for millions of businesses worldwide.
