The Block and Its Dates
Indianapolis is rebuilding the west block of Georgia Street as a park. The block runs from South Capitol Avenue to South Illinois Street in the Wholesale District. Merritt Chase, the landscape architecture firm on the project, reported construction under way on 12 February 2025.
Published opening dates differ by publisher. Merritt Chase states the new park environment opens in the spring of 2026. Visit Indy's new-developments page lists the west block opening as October 2026. Its construction page schedules the full three-block redevelopment by fall 2026.
Two buildings front the block. Visit Indy lists the Signia by Hilton Indianapolis and the Indiana Convention Center expansion for December 2026 on its new-developments page and for the fourth quarter of 2026 on its construction page.
The Daytime Window the Venue Publishes
The convention center and its skywalks close at about 11 p.m. and reopen at about 6 a.m., and the venue calls those hours event-dependent. The venue publishes 7,100 hotel rooms downtown, 4,700 rooms connected to the building by skywalk and more than half of the downtown rooms within blocks of the building. A day room sells inside the same clock: a morning start and an evening close.
The Event Calendar for the Same Weeks
The venue lists twelve events between 22 September and 12 October 2026. Three run for three days each: MAPP Benchmarking and Best Practices Conference from 29 September, ATD Core4 and ATD OrgDev across the same three days, and the FullScale Symposium from 8 October. A day-use offer can be timed to the days the building fills.
What December Adds
Visit Indy counts 13 properties and 5,500 hotel rooms on the connected package once the Signia and the expansion open. The venue's expansion page states 90,000 square feet of meeting space at the Signia, including a 50,455-square-foot Grand Ballroom, and an 803-room tower on the existing skywalk network. The venue states the expansion makes it possible to host two citywide conventions at one time. Two citywide events at once hold two daytime windows in the same building.
What the Park Adds
Visit Indy states the vision for the space on its new-developments page: "a public outdoor space that can be easily activated by convention and meeting planners to extend the footprint of their events to include outdoor space". The block sits between the convention center and the new Signia.
Straight-line distances below come from OpenStreetMap coordinates with a haversine calculation, so read them as direct distance and add street routing. The Omni Severin Hotel at 40 West Jackson Place measures 380 metres from the convention center at 100 South Capitol Avenue, or 0.24 of a mile. The Signia site at 101 West Georgia Street carries no OpenStreetMap node, so this piece publishes no measured distance for it.
What the Record Does Not Carry
No publisher carries event capacity or permitted footprints for the lawn, plaza, grove or canopy areas. No publisher carries an event fee schedule, an insurance requirement, a load-in window or a programming calendar for the block.
Three items decide a 2027 day-use plan for a property on the corridor. They are the confirmed west block opening date, the permitted footprint of each outdoor space, and the street's event calendar for its first full season.
