The money the county already holds
Visit North Carolina published the Surry County visitor-spending sheet on 5 August 2026. Tourism Economics compiles the study for the state. It puts 2025 visitor spending in Surry County at USD 166.05 million, up 3.2 percent on 2024 and 0.4 percent of the state total. North Carolina drew USD 37.2 billion, up 1.3 percent.
The county sheet splits the total into five lines. Lodging took USD 38.02 million. Food and beverage took USD 57.35 million, transport USD 39.83 million, recreation USD 17.55 million and retail USD 13.30 million. The lodging line includes second-home spending and the transport line includes ground and air travel.
Tourism supported 936 jobs in the county and USD 42.20 million in personal income. The spending generated USD 6.71 million in state taxes and USD 4.88 million in local taxes. The study puts the tax saving at USD 162.38 for each county resident.
The property that entered that market
The Balladeer opened on 21 August 2026 at 239 Willow Street in Mount Airy. The building is dated 1892 and ran first as a tobacco factory and later as a textile mill. The hotel's own About page calls it the historic Spencer's Mill building. Hotel Business calls it the 1892 Sparger Building.
The property flies the Tribute Portfolio flag. Interior Image Group designed the interiors with Rowhouse Architects. The hotel publishes six room categories, from the 275-square-foot Blue Ridge King to the 470-square-foot Skybridge Studio King, which adds a 455-square-foot private skybridge. The hotel publishes no total key count. Cvent's venue record and THP News each report 70 guest rooms.
The event space a daytime booking sits beside
The hotel's events page lists three spaces. The Balladeer Ballroom measures 1,300 square feet, Lyric Hall 300 square feet and the courtyard 2,100 square feet. The page also offers room blocks for weddings.
Two venues in the Barrel Building at 227 Willow Street carry the larger group demand. Velora on Willow holds up to 250 guests across indoor halls, a patio and a courtyard that opens into the pocket park on Willow Street. Fablewood is a steakhouse led by Chef Freddy Lee. Sunhouse Hospitality, the hotel's owner, announced both venues on 19 December 2025.
The daytime read
A daytime booking sells part of a room-day. The county study sets the market this property prices into, and it publishes no occupancy, average daily rate or revenue per available room for Surry County.
The three event spaces total 3,700 square feet against a 70-room base. The group calendar the two Barrel Building venues feed runs to 250 guests on a single booking.
Visit North Carolina publishes the next county sheet each August. The 2026 edition will carry the first full year that includes the hotel and its two neighbouring venues.
